Onkyo’s New Universal Player Can Handle Anything

DVD? CD? SACD? No problem for the DV-SP800.

No matter the media you have, Onkyo’s DV-SP800 likely can handle it. This universal player decodes SACD (Super Audio Compact Discs), DVD-Audio discs, MP3 CDs, DVDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs and plain ol’ audio CDs. The format-savvy player lets consumers worry about the music instead of whether they can play it.

Starting with the video components, the progressive-scan player is the company’s top of the line DVD player with THX-Ultra certification, meaning the audio and video circuitry will perform at tiptop levels. It uses Analog Devices’ NSV Precision Video 108-MHz/12-bit video digital/analog converters for very high-quality picture reproduction. And it’s progressive-scan component video output takes full advantage of HDTV capabilities, and 3:2 pulldown circuitry removes video artifacts that sometimes come when images shot on film are shown on video displays.

It’s no slouch in the audio department, either. The DV-SP800 features high-end 192-kHz/24-bit digital/analog converters and Onkyo’s Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC) to remove stray pulse noise for a smoother, richer analog output signal. You also get on-board DTS and Dolby Digital processing as well as digital audio outputs for use with external processors, if you don’t want to use the built-in ones. Onkyo uses its Direct-Digital Path technology to preserve signal integrity, bypassing redundant processing of signals to the coaxial and optical digital outputs. And if you want to use the player strictly as an audio device, the video circuitry can be switched off to deliver the purest audio output to either the digital or 5.1 analog RCA outputs.
